What is emerald?
Emeralds are a form of green or bluish green mineral (beryl). The green colour comes from trace amounts of chromium and occasionally vanadium. The origin of the word "emerald" is said to be a Sanskrit word meaning, not surprisingly, "green". The value of an emerald depends on its cut, clarity, colour and carat. Currently Colombia produces the best emeralds from a mine in Muzo.
History of emeralds.
In the Bible (chapters 28 and 39 of Exodus), a number of precious stones are mentioned to be placed in the High Priest's Breastplate, representing the different tribes of Israel. This is generally considered to be one of the origins for our present day tradition of birthstones.

Emerald is the birthstone for May, as well as the traditional gemstone for the astrological signs of Taurus and Cancer.
